5. Force on force and the escalation of force The civilian use of force is based on the rules of force on force. Meaning victims use of force for self-defense should be based on the force used by the attacker. There are many factors that will affect your use of force. It is not an exact science, but is based on logic of how YOU perceive the threat. There are two types of threats (persons) to consider: 1. Passive resistance / aggressor: The person is not displaying any hostile acts or attempting to assault or harm you. Exa: The person is cutting down a bush on your property and you tell him to stop. He is resisting you request but displays no imminent threat to you. 2. Active resistance / aggressor: The person is acting in a threating manner and may also have a weapon. How you deal with the active aggressor will depend the persons threat level and the urgency of the attack. Exa: The person is on cutting down your bush, armed with a handgun and points the gun at you or start to physically attack you.
